Face oil or moisturizer: which step are you looking for?

You wash, pat dry, and your face feels tight in a way it never used to. Skin that was oily for years now feels closer to sandpaper, rough by afternoon, with makeup catching where it used to glide. It behaves like someone else's skin.

Wanting it to feel like yours again is not vanity. It is comfort. And the first thing to know is that the answer is probably not a richer moisturizer. It is oil, the thing your skin used to make plenty of. That is what Soft Landing gives back.

What changed

Around menopause, skin tends to make less of its own oil. For years that oil was quietly doing a job: coating the surface of your skin and helping slow the water leaving. With less of it, water can leave faster and the surface feels tight and rough.

What a moisturizer does

A moisturizer is mostly water, with ingredients that help attract it and hold it for a while. That is a real job and worth keeping. But when the problem is missing oil, more cream adds more water, not more of what used to hold it there. That is why a heavier cream can still leave you tight by noon.

What a face oil does

A face oil does the other half: it adds lipids on top. Soft Landing is two of them: jojoba, which is mostly wax esters, and squalane, a stable form of squalene. Your skin's own oil contains wax esters and squalene. A few drops after cleansing, pressed onto the face and neck, over the moisturizer you already use.

You do not have to choose one or the other. Keep your moisturizer for water. Add the oil for the part your skin stopped making.

How to tell which you need

• Tight right after washing, before anything goes on: you need both, and the oil is the step you are missing.
• Fine in the morning, tight or rough by afternoon: your moisturizer is working, the water is just not staying. Add the oil on top.
• Dry as well as tight: a water step first (your moisturizer or Daily Quench), then the oil.
